April is a big month for healthcare awareness. From a global call to action on public health to increased advocacy for those living with chronic illness, April's healthcare observances remind us that good health doesn't happen by accident, it takes awareness, action, and community.

World Health Day, observed every April 7th, marks the start of a month packed with meaningful health observances. This article covers World Health Day, Parkinson's Awareness Month, and other key April healthcare dates.

What Is World Health Day?

World Health Day is an annual observance marking the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO). World Health Day celebrates unity among nations to solve global health issues.

The 2026 theme is "Together for health. Stand with science," highlighting the critical role of research and evidence-based solutions in advancing global well-being.

When Is World Health Day 2026?

World Health Day is April 7th, 2026. World Health Day is held on the 7th of April each year.

History of World Health Day

World Health Day started as a way to celebrate the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO). The World Health Organization is an international organization focused on protecting and promoting public health worldwide.

The WHO's first meeting was on April 7th, 1948, marking a pivotal moment in global health governance. The first World Health Day was held 2 years later, in 1950.

Over the years, the WHO has played a pivotal role in public health improvements, including the eradication and reduction of various life-threatening diseases. The WHO is also responsible for helping billions of people access health care and creating invaluable world health reports.

World Health Day brings awareness to both these achievements and areas of needed improvement. Each year, this holiday helps increase and improve healthcare literacy and advocacy worldwide.

Parkinson’s Awareness Month & World Parkinson’s Day

April is Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month. In addition, April 11th is World Parkinson's Disease Day

These observances shine a light on the millions of people living with Parkinson's, while helping others recognize the symptoms and better understand what this journey looks like.

What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson's disease is a chronic, neurodegenerative disease that causes sporadic movements and mental health symptoms such as depression and anxiety. Symptoms usually worsen with time, and as of 2026, there is no known cure.

Common symptoms of Parkinson's include movement problems, tremors, stiffness, emotional changes, and difficulty speaking or chewing.

It's estimated that about 1.1 million live with Parkinson's Disease in the U.S. Around 90,000 Americans are diagnosed with this disease each year. These statistics underscore the substantial impact of this condition on society and the urgency of raising awareness for those affected.

History of Parkinson’s Awareness Month and World Parkinson’s Day

World Parkinson's Day first started on April 11th, 1997. This date was chosen to celebrate Dr. James Parkinson, the first person to identify Parkinson's Disease.

The Parkinson's Disease Foundation extended this holiday to the entire month of April to increase awareness for Parkinson's Disease education and people suffering from the disease.

Other April Healthcare Observances

April is also a month for occupational therapy, cancer control, and public health recognition:

  • National Occupational Therapy Month – Occupational therapy helps individuals regain daily living skills they may have lost after an accident or due to disability. National Occupational Therapy Month helps people learn about and support occupational therapists.
  • National Cancer Control Month – Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. National Cancer Control Month started in 1983, and advocates for cancer prevention and treatment, encouraging healthy living habits and routine cancer screenings.
  • National Public Health Week (4/6-4/12) – National Public Health Week is an observance to help us recognize the positive impacts of public health systems. 2026’s theme is “Ready. Set. Action!”
